Mixed Start For 2009

So a mixed start to the season with the Witches currently sitting near the foot of the table and some tough tests.

After the injury hit first meeting decimated the squad (which is becoming to familiar scenario for Ipswich), it was always going to be a tough opening for the team. The opening home defeat to Coventry could not have helped morale in the team, but the team put it right against Lakeside with home win on Good Friday, but couldn’t replicate the brilliant result they got there last year in the return fixture. The meeting against Poole saw the team sneak a 2-point victory against what so far is an extremely poor Pirates side, who look no where near as good as their league winning side of last year.

Wolverhampton will be the next test for the Witches at Foxhall, in what will be an intriguing and exciting match up. Wolves currently are the pace setters so far in the league, with a thumping away victory at Poole. If the Witches are to secure the victory next Thursday all riders will have to on top form.

One of the riders who will improve this season for Wolves is Ty Procter. When he first came over from Australia, the pressure was on him to up his average just to stay in the country. Not only did he manage this, but he was one of the stars for Redcar. Proctor is certainly one to watch. Every time I see this rider, he always impresses me and will only improve at Wolves.

Maybe one day the young Aussie will make it into the Grand Prix series, which is only a short time away now.

Another rider who I am convinced will make it into the GP series in the future is Darcy Ward who has performed brilliantly this season, and showing us what he could have been capable of if he had been able to ride for the Witches this season.  I was able to get to watch him ride when King’s Lynn made a visit to Loomer Road in a meeting where he destroyed the Potters line up. Looking natural on the bike, he rode his team to an impressive victory on what is a notoriously competitive track, but the fact that he has managed to keep up the form so far is sensational. Where ever he turns up this season, the opposition will worry about the damage he can do.

It is still to early on in the season to get excited or despondent but these early meetings are a signal of what lies ahead this season.

It looks like it could be a tough one for Ipswich. From the early home fixtures, we can see that they will be close and the racing exciting.
In the three away meeting this season, Ipswich have been off the pace, and not really looked like picking up points, but it is early and after a few more meetings are ridden, the riders will be settled and know more about each other and the improvement should come.
