New Season Hopes - 19 March 2009
After some sterling performances last season, the Witches ended the season without any silverware, however it was still a great season.
It was a nice to see a competitive outfit a Foxhall after a few seasons of languishing near the foot of the table. All the riders showed they had spirit when went on the brilliant seven match unbeaten run, that saw the team rise to the top of the league.
But that was last season, so what is in store this season?
Exciting changes to the line up………
There has been a mixed response to the Witches line up for this coming season, many are saying that the team are going to be competing for the wooden spoon whilst others are predicting a play-off place come the end of the campaign, this season is going to be unpredictable.
Ipswich has a very promising team and can only be applauded for taking a risk with Darcy in the reserve berth. The young Aussie already come with a very good reputation and has been rewarded with a chance to try his hand at the Elite league.
Many will be questioning why the Ipswich management team have gone for this option, no one knows hows he will perform in British speedways top flight, will he be able to handle the pressure? Does he have the equipment? He is being giving the right advice by his mechanics? What happens if he flops?
These are all questions that need to be asked, but we also need to look at the flip side. He has already earned himself a string glowing reviews, he has shown something to make Ipswich want to take the gamble, this is how gems are unearthed and the Witches are showing they are looking to the future and what better time to try this when the Elite league is missing many of the sports top stars….
Could this be the way the Speedway in this country is to survive? With Grand Prix stars opting to race elsewhere, it is a great opportunity for young, inexperienced riders to compete at the top level and develop their skills before moving on to the international stage, and hopefully we can have another British world champion.
With the exodus of the leading stars, it is now up to the riders left to supply the entertainment. Instead of seeing the likes Crump cruise it around most tracks, we hopefully will see battles at the front of heats as well now, every rider is capable of beating anyone.
I cannot wait for the racing to start……………………….
(Subsequent to this article being written it was announced that Darcy Ward would not be permitted to ride for the Witches in 2009 but we decided to publish this blog regardless)
