Sid Clark
All at Ipswich Speedway were saddened to hear that Sid Clark, a Witches legend from the 1950s, passed away on Monday June 28th, aged 85. Our deepest condolences go to his family and friends
He first appeared in a Witches race jaceket on May 4th 1951 after being booked as a last minute guest for a meeting against Rayleigh and was an immediate hit with the home fans. A crowd of several thousand saw him score 11 points and break the track record in the process. Ipswich promoter Arthur Franklyn managed to persuade his parent club, Walthamstow, that he could be used by Ipswich for the remainder of the season providing it didn't impact on their fixtures. At the end of 1951 Ipswich were accepted into the Third Division (later renamed the Southern League). As part of his team building for the new season Arthur Franklyn signed Sid and another Walthamstow rider, Alby Smith, for a £400 fee. Sid was made team captain and went on to score almost 400 points that year. He also progressed to the Division One rounds of the World Championship. Sid continued to lead the Ipswich team for the next two years and helped many newcomers such as Tich Read in that time. He retired from the sport at the end of 1954.
